Searching:

The functionality of the CD-ROM manual is designed around frames. Each paragraph constitutes a frame and each frame is assigned a unique record number.

To initiate a search, choose the Query button from the toolbelt. Type the word(s) for which you wish to search. The query will retrieve those frames that contain all of the search terms regardless of whether the search terms are adjacent or scattered throughout the frame. If the search terms should be treated as a phrase, they should be enclosed in quotation marks. Once a search has retrieved the relevant frames, the “next” and “previous” buttons on the toolbar allow movement between the frames. The “backtrack” button will return to the first frame of the query. The “trail” button will open a window revealing a list of the frames that have been viewed. F3, F4, and F5 can be substituted for “next,” “previous” and “backtrack.”

The CD-ROM manual supports Boolean operators, wildcards and phrase searching. A question mark is a wildcard for a single character and the asterisk is used as the wildcard for multiple characters.

In addition to searching by the query method, you can search by using the “Contents” button. Once you find a topic in the contents, you may double click on it to jump to the appropriate manual section.

Shadow Files:

Shadow files allow you to create a personalized copy of the CD-ROM manual. You can highlight, add notes, and mark important portions of the manual. To create a shadow file:

  1. From the File menu, select New and a new window will open.
  2. Choose Folio Shadow File from the List Files of Type scroll bar.
  3. In the File Name box, enter a name for the file. You now have a personal copy of the manual that you can modify with highlights, bookmarks, and notes.
  4. To add a note, select Customize from the menu bar. Then select note. A small window appears into which you type your note. When you close the note window, a small yellow “sticky note” icon appears in your shadow file at the point where the note was inserted. To read the note, click on the yellow icon.
  5. To bookmark a section, select Customize from the menu bar. Then select Bookmark. You will be prompted to assign a name to each bookmark. To retrieve a bookmarked section, select Customize, then bookmark. You will retrieve a list of bookmarks from which to make a selection.
  6. To highlight text, select Customize from the menu bar. Then select highlighter. You will be prompted to enter a name for the each highlighter you create. After you enter a name, click on the character button. A new window will open and you will have the option of modifying the font color, type and size. You can apply attributes, such as bold and italics and you can define the background color behind the text. Once you have created a highlighter, you can apply the highlighter to any text within the shadow file.

Printing:

There are three methods for printing from the manual. The first method is to click on the print button in the toolbar. This option will print only the current frame. The second option is to use the mouse and highlight a section of the manual before clicking on the print button in the toolbar. The third option is to make note of the beginning and ending record numbers of the desired manual section. Then insert the beginning and ending record numbers in the from and to portions of the print box.
