We are looking to do a library card campaign and want to track our succes. I was hoping to hear from other libraries who have done this successfully.

Did you create a new patron type? Or did you insert either a fixed field or a variable field into the patron record to track the success?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Melissa – For projects where we want to track usage, we inserted a variable length note into the patron record, as we don’t have any extra fixed fields that can be used. It works OK – as long as staff have the guidelines not to change this field. We have a special patron record template for staff creation of cards, and our developer built an upload tool that creates the cards with this field when we upload a data file with other patron record information (such as child name and barcode). We do this for an initiative to distribute cards to new Kindergartners.
Using a fixed field would be preferable if you have one to use.

We are a public library and have policies and guidelines for new card types, plus our loan rules would be too complicated for us to do this with a new ptype. For the above, we use a regular card type. We do have a card type for “complimentary cards” that we use when we occasionally send out mailings (Postcard with a library card number and PIN). These are temporary cards with a self-generated barcode number. They have a set expiration date and are deleted after the campaign if they aren’t used. We are able to track these because we create the patron records in advance and have the complete barcode/patron number range. We do include a note in these also.
HTH,
Vicki
