This is to notify you of a proposed change to the IUG Bylaws concerning the term length of the Secretary/Treasurer. This amendment was proposed by the Steering Committee Officers.

During the IUG Officers meeting at ALA Annual 2018, Officers discussed and unanimously agreed to put forth the proposal in a membership vote.

Amendment: Term length of Secretary/Treasurer
Amend Article IV, Executive Officers, Section 2, Terms of Office, Subsection B, by striking "two" and inserting "three."

Current wording:
The Secretary/Treasurer shall be elected for a term of two years.

If adopted will read:
The Secretary/Treasurer shall be elected for a term of three years.

Rationale:

  • The Secretary/Treasurer handles duties relating to membership, financials, and group history. The three year term is proposed to provide more time to better learn and manage the details involved in this role. It will also create consistency as the three year term will mirror that of the other steering committee officers (Vice Chair, Chair, Past Chair).

Considerations:

  • The proposed change will mean fewer opportunities for membership to run for election as Secretary/Treasurer.
  • The proposed change, as a three year commitment, may be more difficult for some and therefore limit the number of individuals able or willing to fulfill the role.

Implementation:

  • With a yes vote, when IUG Elections are held in the fall of 2020, the membership will vote to elect a Secretary/Treasurer to a three year term to begin March 2021.

Next week, site contacts for all current IUG member libraries will receive a link to vote on the proposed amendment, along with an opportunity to vote on nominees for the 2020-2021 IUG Steering Committee. Our current bylaws are posted on the IUG website, along with the proposed amendment. Please let me know if you have any questions.
