Followup.
We found that although it is true we didn't have to do anything, freeing
busy records suddenly became more complicated.
It is affecting item records only on our system. Here are the instructions
we managed to put together for staff who frequently free busy records:
------------------------------------------
Freeing busy records over 8 digits long
In October 2008, HALHP surpassed item record number 99999999. This meant a
change in the way record numbers are entered when you free busy records.
Short version:
We will have to add a "0" (zero) in front of any 8 digit item record
number on HALHP; soon this will apply to order records also
We will NOT have to add the 0 at the beginning of 9-digit record
numbers.
The x will no longer work to replace an unknown check digit. Use a
instead if needed. (If you know the actual check digit, use it.)
Examples:
If you are asked to free record i9399315x you enter it as i09399315a
-- this is an 8 digit record number
If you are asked to free record i10003064x (or record i10003064) you
enter it as i10003064a -- this is a nine digit record number
(If you actually know the check digit, you can also enter it exactly
(using the second example) as i100030646)
A clue: if you enter a record number and there is a blinking _ at the end,
first try re-entering the record number with a 0 (zero) at the beginning.
For example, if after entering the record number you see
i9399315a_ and the space at the end is blinking, try entering
i09399315a
-------------------------------------------------
If anybody has encountered this situation and knows a simpler way of dealing
with it, we would love to know!

Thanks again, Susan. Really interesting that you went to 9 digits -- the
manual doesn't even hint at that possibility, just states flatly that record
numbers are 7 or 8 digits including the check digit.
I guess we'll need to check with III for clarification.

In June our item record numbers rolled over as follows:
from i99999997 to i100000009
NOTE: the record number went from a total of 8 digits to a total of 9 digits
(including the check digit)
The rollover was completely seamless. We did not have to do anything at our
end, other than alerting library staff that item record numbers would now be
1 digit longer for new records..
So, no, numbering did not start over.
