Re: [IUG] requests/holds

We allow holds for items that are "in library" which we pull for customers. Items that are checked out even if they are billed for being overdue. Our thought is that many people who get billed for an item have the book they just have not returned it in time not to get billed for it (we bill after most items being 21 days overdue). But we do not allow items marked missing, lost, lost and paid to have holds placed on them by customers through the OPAC as these items are more than likely not availalbe.

We allow patrons to request a hold on any item in the circulating collection, even if it is on the shelf. We then retrieve the item and notify the patron that it is on hold for them.

We allow holds/requests on items that are on order and in process, but
not on lost or missing items. We are new to allowing patrons to place
their own holds, but decided to try allowing holds on these categories
of items. We know that some of these holds may never be fulfilled but
we decided to allow it anyway and watch to see what happens. We can
always reevaluate our decision in the future if we discover too many
problems.

We only allow holds on items that are currently checked out.
We don't do paging for local patrons.
If it is available and on the shelf, go get it and check it out. No hold
necessary.
If missing, billed, on search, etc. we don't know where it is and
presumably the patron doesn't either. But if you find it, we will check
it out to you.
