I agree with Bob. ALIS uses the server name as well. We have changed internet providers a couple of times as well as changing IP ranges within the same provider, and using the server name has allowed us to not have to involve massive changes on workstations across more than fifty locations. All of the work associated with such changes was then done by and under the control of central site staff without having to deal with panic in the streets.

Configuring Mill clients to point to an IP address instead of hostname is just begging for more work down the road. Note that although the arg that Steve points to says "ip=", it will accept the IP address or the server name.
