We do a couple things with perl

1. We reformat and email out notices. We reformat some of our paging
slips send them to the appropriate groups for disposition. I have
plans to do the same with our overdue and recall notices.

2. Create and send out courtesy notices and I'm working on one notice
where I would send out an email to indicate that an item is in the mail
for a patron. (This takes advantage of the oracle back end.)

3. I also created an RSS feed using perl and SQL

4. We have used perl for various conversions, to get data into
Millennium and export it out. For example covert a special collection
in excel files to be loaded in to the database and exporting and
converting data into a format to feed in our enterprise search.

Subject: [IUG] What are you doing with perl?

I'm doing a poster session at the IUG conference entitled "what perl can
do for you". The idea is partially to show people who are not using
perl scripts at their libraries that perl might be a useful tool for
them, and partially to provide everyone with examples of how perl is
being used or could be used in libraries, especially in relation to the
III software.

I've found a bunch of things in the list archive, and a few things in
the Clearinghouse, and I've already contacted a lot of the people who
posted those. If you're using perl scripts in your library, would you
be willing to give me a little bit of info that I could include in the
poster session? I'd like a brief statement of what it does (like
"creates web page of videos from Create Lists output" or "calculates
check digit of barcodes"). Optionally, I'd also like the name of your
institution, name(s) of person(s) who created the script, and where the
script is available (either a URL or an e-mail address) if you're
willing to share the script.

One thing of special interest to me is the use of perl scripts for
things you can't do in Create Lists. For example, I have a script
(based on one from NOBLE I think) that creates a purchase alert report,
which uses Create Lists and then extracts, sorts, and displays the data
in a format that Create Lists can't. I also have a script that finds
holds that are going to expire in the coming month, which I don't think
Create Lists can do. I'd love to hear about more things like this.

If you use too many perl scripts to mention them all, what I'm most
interested in are (1) things that a lot of us could use or relate to or
benefit from, and/or (2) things that are novel or interesting.

Finally, I'd love to know if you have any favorite perl resources for
beginners - books, web sites, etc.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Phil
