We have an off-site storage building. Our request <hold level> is set to item. And we have a request rule that only allows the requesting of available items from storage. We only use the item paging slips. The items in our building are shelved by size, each item has a unique remote location. Since the paging list could not be customized to include the remote location, we had to write a retrieval list job that would serve as a pull list. Let me know if you would like to see the rule.

Greetings --

After a failed attempt at writing a suite of AutoIt scripts for
Millennium to perform a specific function, I was delighted at how
smoothly Expect works with the INNOPAC. In Millennium, there were
frequent illogical burps in the Java GUI that broke the script, whereas
I have found Expect with telnet/ssh to be quite consistent. The nature
of telnet/ssh lends itself much more to scripting than the Java GUI -
indeed, there's no straightforward way to "expect" a certain response
from the app. See Harvey Hahn's articles at
http://www.ahml.info/oml/AutoIt.html for the gory details of his
workarounds.

My two cents from somewhat limited experience: do whatever you can
outside the system via exports and PHP/Perl scripts (no risk to the
primary data and you always have a handle on what's going on), use
Expect for editing records directly where you need to, and only use
AutoIt/Millennium when there's some Mil functionality that you
absolutely need to work with.

We are a new (consoritum) site and are looking for system printer recommendations. We currently are a Classic Dynix site that has 2 continuous-fed system printers. One library uses an Okidata 590 to print notices for their single site and Stark uses a Tally 2130n to print notices for 19 sites.

Our sales rep said III sells HP LaserJet 4250n, 4200n, 4100n and 4050n printers.

We would like to know what printers other libraries are using and should we give up the continuous-fed printers and switch to laser printers? Are there consortiums that have sites using continuous-fed printers and laser printers? If so I'd be interested in learning more about the setups.

Any recommendations or comments you would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

We will soon be going-live (Feb 26) and we would like to know how libraries with bookmobiles handle renewing items for stops that have been cancelled.

In Dynix we have a process we can run that will automatically renew the items until the next stop. We understand this option is not available in Millennium, as of yet, and wonder if there is a work-around that collects items due on a specific date/stop and then renew, or change the due dates, until the next time the bookmobile visits the stop?

Thanks for any help you would like to share.

An update:

Please see the Subject Headings Weekly List for Jan. 9, 2008:

http://www.loc.gov/cgi-bin/gourl?URL=%2Fcatdir%2Fcpso%2Fwls08%2Fawls0802.html

The change from All terrain cycling and All terrain bicycles to Mountain
biking and Mountain bikes has been approved.

It took *much* less time than I anticipated. LCSH can be changed. See
below for how to do it.

************Original Dec. message below:

There is a way libraries can propose updates and new terms to LCSH. It is
the SACO program. Please see:

http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/saco.html

(SACO covers both LCSH and LC Classification. Libraries can apply to be a
"member" which I think takes a commitment of doing 10-12 proposals per
year.)

We (UW) will go ahead and make a change request to change "All terrain
cycling" to "Mountain biking" based on the overwhelming literary warrant
for the latter term.

Change proposals have to come from the grass roots. Go for it.
Consider joining SACO, or find a library that is aleady in it that is
willing to help. Controlled vocabularies must be maintained in order to
remain useful and ultimately tagging individual bib records is not a
scalable solution.

Does anyone, not allowing available material to be requested
(denyifavail), manage to use the Request functionality for requesting
off-site storage material?

We currently offer a non Millennium static web form for requesting
off-site storage items. This form is not prepopulated with data from the
bibliographic record, so it is clumsy for the patron to juggle two
windows and retype or cut and paste the relevant data from the bib
record to the request form.

So far we have not considered using the request functionality for this
purpose because the off-site material has an 'available' status, and we
only allow requests where items are 'not available'.

Alternatively has anyone prepopulated a non-millennium request form with
data from the bib record?

Cheers,

We are also a site that has always used PINs. Several years ago we wanted to test NOT using PINs, and iii was able to set up another port for that purpose; it wasn't something we could do ourselves. Also that was before WebPac Pro and ecommerce, both of which might complicate things. I'm sure iii could give you a more definitive answer on that.

We have always used PINs. We use last name, barcode and PIN. The patron
can set their own PIN if they do not already have one. They just fill in
the blanks, and when the computer sees that there is no PIN, a new
screen is returned and they have to enter the PIN twice (like setting
any password)and then it is in their record. It is an all or nothing
switch. I do not believe you can test in staging first. Yes, patrons who
seldom use their PINs forget them, but they are easily reset. The staff
can do it, or the staff can delete the field and the patron can start
all over.

Most of the time when a patron calls and says they cannot access their
account, it is not the PIN that caused the problem. The library card has
expired or there is a block on their account for non-returned materials
or late fees over the amount which we have set.

Hello,
We're looking for some feedback from libraries who have added PINs to
the WebOPAC. Currently we use the last name and barcode to authenticate.
We are looking to change to a name, barcode, PIN combination.
Is there a way to test this on the staging port before we switch the
live port's authentication?
What have your experiences been with lost or forgotten pins?

Is there staff intervention required to reset pins, and if so, what have
been your experiences? What procedures do you have in place if someone
calls or emails because they are unable to get onto their account
because of a PIN mismatch?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

We are in the process of migrating from Sirsi/Dynix and we are currently

We would like to continue to use the same mailers in Innovative. I was
wondering if other libraries are using the 3-part library crash mailer,
and was hoping someone could suggest a supplier.

We're making progress. My thanks to everyone who's helped on this.

I appear to have a continuity issue. I've developed my list of links: http://www.bridgewater.edu/test/RemoteAccess.htm

When testing them from home, I get different results each time I try. Friday night, they all worked except Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO), then I tried again Sunday evening, Netlibrary and Newsbank were not working. This morning, most of them weren't working at all.

I receive two kinds of errors.
The first is not being able to locate the server.
The second error brings up a search page saying
-- Sorry. "0-www.oxfordreference.com.alex.bridgewater.edu" does not exist or is not available!

Any thoughts on the issue for this inconsistency?

> Section 1. The IUG Steering Committee shall consist of the executive officers of the organization and five [previously four] members of the organization elected at large to represent a broad spectrum of the user population. Steering Committee meetings are open to all interested parties.
>
> Reason for the amendment: We are seeking a fifth member-at-large position for the Steering Committee to assist in the management of an organization that continues to grow and expand in services offered. Our desire is to have a Steering Committee member serve as a liaison to the regional groups.
>
>
> Proposed Bylaws change #2: If a fifth 'member at large' steering committee is added, should we elect three member at large members in even years?
>
> ARTICLE V. IUG STEERING COMMITTEE
> Section 3. Terms of Office for Members-at-Large The membership shall elect five [previously four] IUG members to serve on the IUG Steering Committee for a two-year term. To provide for continuity, two members-at-large would be elected in odd years and three members-at-large would be elected in even years [this section reflects the new voting pattern].
>
> Reason for the amendment: Since we are proposing to change the number of members-at-large, we need change the way in which they are elected. With this structure, four new steering committee members will be elected each year. Also, the third member at large will be elected in years with no secretary treasurer election.
>
>
> Proposed Bylaws change #3: Should the proposed provision in the case of a tie be adopted?
>
> ARTICLE VIII. NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS
> Section 2. Elections
> d. All candidates will be elected by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by a coin toss, to be mediated by the IUG Past-Chair immediately following the election [the second sentence is new].
>
> Reason for the amendment: In reviewing the bylaws, we discovered that we had no provision for a tie vote. We have not had a tie in recent elections, but we had some that were very close. This will provide a process should a tie occur after the voting.
>
> If you have any questions, please direct them to me. Please look for the voting to open on Monday January 28, 2008. Voting will end on February 13, 2008. This will allow us, if approved, to modify our call for Steering Committee nominees and elections for new Steering Committee members.
>
> --end--
>
> We are voting on these bylaw changes first, and then will open up a call for nominations for people to run for Steering Committee. We need to know how many positions will be open as we invite candidates. I will send more information in the coming weeks.
>
> If you have any questions about these bylaws amendments OR running for Steering Committee, please do not hesitate to contact me at cseeman at umich dot edu dot Serving on the IUG Steering Committee has been a tremendous experience and I hope you will consider it.

lunch included

Library(Dallas, TX) and Harry Youtt, Attorney; Los Angeles, CA

In the good old days, all we had to master was the Copyright Law and
Fair Use. We would acquire a book or a journal, post and monitor a
"fair-use" photocopy policy, and go on about our activities. Now,
instead of receiving print materials, we become connected with online
resources. With each new digital information product, there arrives a
separate license. Each contains its own private "copyright" terms
imposed by contract. This course provides an introduction to license
provisions and terminology, comparing the license and copyright, and
managing the licensing process. Through lecture, instructor debate and
student participation, you will learn strategies for developing a
license management model, including building a team for license
evaluations and negotiation; conduct a clause-by-clause analysis of an
existing license agreement; develop negotiating strategies; and discuss
techniques for building a productive relationship with the legal department.
