Bob's probably got this exactly right. Saturn works. Jupiter and Billack don't [1]. Jupiter returns non-existent domain responses and Billack refuses the connections (could be just refusing external connections).

Chances are the DNS was changed on one and then not propagated to the other two. Until all three have and respect the wildcard entry, you'll get random errors and connections depending upon which of the three is used as the primary.
