For the past year and a half, we have been using our delivery service to
transfer items to and from the branch libraries on JMU's campus. We are
close to implementing the next phase, which is delivering to campus
offices, but would like to know how other libraries handle this before
we get started. If your library does deliver to offices around your
campus, we would appreciate it if you could answer the following
questions. Any other comments or suggestions are welcome. Thanks in
advance for your help!
Do you use interdepartmental mail or do you provide a courier service?
Appalachian State hires student assistants to make deliveries to
departmental offices on campus. The service is only available to
faculty. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday while school is in
session. Requests are printed several times daily, again Monday through
Friday, and usually delivered within hours.
Does your library have the Held Item Delivery module? How does it work
for this practice?
WNCLN (ASU, UNCA, WCU) has long used the 'Request' function for moving
items among the 3 institutions. ASU simply allows patrons to use this
function to request a local delivery option. While only faculty can opt
for departmental delivery, ASU uses the request function to allow
faculty, staff and students to specify a library pickup. Those request
are placed on the 'hold' shelf for pickup.
If you do not have the Held Item Delivery module, do you use the system
to allow requests for delivery to offices? If so, would you share your
documentation with us?
Do you arrange for items to be picked up or is the patron responsible
for returning items.
There is no pickup. Patrons either use one of the large book return
drops scattered around campus, bring it back to the library, or use
campus mail.
