Thanks for your reply Joe and I'll pass this information on.

However, our problem seems to be with certain characters such as apostrophes,
quotation marks, non-breaking spaces, copyright symbols, etc. which are
converted to a Web-friendly version using a special code (e.g. apostrophe ->
&apos) which Firefox & IE7, etc. can handle OK. But seemingly this is not
strict XML according to the RSS 2.0 standard (which is very unforgiving), and
so any dedicated RSS software which relies on well-formed XML will not
recognise the feed because the XML standard says that it's not even allowed to
process it. However, if e.g. the &apos is changed to its Hex equivalent
(')in the source, then it does not break the feed.

Given all this, I wondered if other libraries advise users on which Feed Readers
they should use? Or maybe they run some kind of script on the .xml files to
change the problem characters to the acceptable Hex equivalents?
