I have searched the Archives and I have found the discussions about using
a certain string in the 856 field to force the link for an online version
to open in a new window. This works fine when one is looking at the
individual catalog entry for that title and one clicks on the
856-generated link offered there.

However, what about the situation in which a patron has simply searched
the catalog, scans down the list of titles offered, sees the icon in the
record for the title he or she wants that reads "website," and clicks on
that link? In that case, the link does not open a new window but simply
goes directly to the web page.

(sigh)

Is there a work around for this problem? (We wish patrons to always see
online versions in a new window, so that when they close that window--and
we hope they do, eventually at least--they will release the license.)

See <http://innovativeusers.org/list/archives/2007/msg06097.html> for a way to construct an alternative for your record browse. Just add a target="_blank" attribute to the anchor element in this piece:

<a href="
<!--{fieldspec:Vby856:u}-->
" target="_blank">

Of course, target="_blank" is not considered XHTML 1.0 strictly valid. Just a minor point, since it does work just dandy ;-)
