Re: SCOPED CATALOG SEARCHING AND SHARED SERIAL BIBS

Carol:  I can respond to #2.  We have two libraries (medical center  and university) which share serial bibs.  We put multi in the location code and then have codes for each library.  The university library has electronic claiming and invoicing, but not the medical center at this point.    All of the serials activity for individual titles are tied to the checkin and order records.  And as these are separate for each account, they don't conflict with each other.  When I bring the medical center up on electronic
claiming I don't anticipate any conflict.  I'm still on text-based, not millennium.

I have two queries:
 1) Has anyone set up a scoped catalog (in our case four sites share a catalog) so that when no results are retrieved in a scoped search, the search is automatically rerun in the entire catalog and  results, is any, are displayed?2) After my experience with a shared dynix catalog and the problems with shared serial bibs, I am reluctant to merge serial bibs in a shared catalog system where several sites may have active subscriptions to the same title and where we all share the same serials module.  Could those of you with experience in that area, please comment? I want to set up electronic invoicing and claiming and am worried that problems may result with these shared records. We also create items for each periodical piece as these circulate and the item listing in III seems very cumbersome to work with.  What I believe will happen is that items from all the different locations will appear in a random order in the listing.

On the other hand, none of these worries could be real!  Thanks for your comments.--Carol Resco
