Karen,
Our system also crashed in August this year and we reloaded from our back up
tape. Of course we do full backup of our tapes everyday so that nothing was
lost from the previous days work. III was very helpful in supplying us with
emergency ALPHA deck and the tape back up systems and in working me through
the set up etc. Once the configuration of the deck is complete and the tape
deck is responding, recovery is done using the last known back up and
verified tape. If the tape is not verified, the system will not accept
it.
After this is completed, III will complete the process on thoier side and
you should be up and running by the next business day.
The critical thing is to have a current verified back up tape. If you do
not run full back up every day, you will do well to have a full bakup of the
system once a week, just in case. That way loss of data will be minimal.
The full back up tape will be used to restore your data, and the daily
backup tapes will be used to update the data from the last known full back
up tape.
Please feel free to call me if you need further clarification or the detail
of my experience.

Karen - I saw your posting and wanted to ask you a question - when your
system crashed did you have to somehow reload all your bib etc. records?
One person a III told me that the back up does not contain the records -
just wondering if you knew anythng about that.
Is Lakme home?

Unfortunately we found ourselves in the position where we had to reload
from tape some partial data loss as well as reload the entire database
after system crashes. The good news is that in both incidents restoration
of data from backup tapes worked. The most recent event for us was August
10, the day before I left for vacation. We were actually down the previous
afternoon and the morning of the 10th along with prior episodes of
instability. Hardware replacement (procurement, delivery, installation)
took longer than restoring the data, but the time depends on the size of
your database.
