EZ Proxy without Patron API?

We currently have WAM and are considering moving to using
EZ Proxy for remote access to our databases instead to eliminate 
the setup that WAM requires of our users.

We know a number of other III sites are already doing this and
wondered if anyone is doing it without using Patron API (and if
so how) or if the API is simply required to do it.

I'll summarize any information received directly for the list.
