Anne -- I am not sure what is going on in Emeryville, but the message on
the Unattended Backup log that you received was to tell you that the
program did not run last night.  The Control program is stopped during a
backup and restarted when the backup is complete.  If the Unattended
Backup program could not stop the control program, it could not perform
the backup.  

Unfortunately, this is a helpdesk issue.
