We keep our books and CD's together on the shelves. We package them in two
different ways. If the publisher has provided a secure pocket for the CD,
we leave it in the pocket. If there is no publisher secure pocket, but
there is room in the book, we have our Binding unit add a secure pocket for
the CD. For these we add a "Contains" label to the piece indicating the
item contains a disk. This information also goes in the item record
"Message" field so Circulation can check to make sure the disk is returned.
If there is no room in the book, we put the CD with its jewel case in a
clear plastic "jewel case preserver." The CD is targeted with a CD target
from 3M. The case is labeled with the same call no. as the book with a
designator at the end of "disk." We attach an item record for the book and
one for the CD. They sit together on the shelf with the other books. The
case provides protection if the CD falls on the floor. Retaining the jewel
case allows us to also keep any information that came with the CD in the
jewel case. We have had no problem with disappearing disks. The jewel
case preservers are $.69 each if 100 are purchased. The last ones we
purchased were from Demco.
CD's on the stand-alone stations are left in their jewel cases and put in a
file case near the computers which are in the Referenc area. Documentation
for the CD titles is on a set of shelves in the same area. If these titles
are eventually transferrred to the stacks, they are handled as described
above.

Hello,
As I've been reading the CD-ROM and books replies, I've started to wonder:
What do you all do with stand-alone CD-ROMs? Our general policy is to
interfile all media with books, creating less confusion about locations for
the user, and its a policy that has worked out well. Our concern, though,
is that simply shelving a CD in a jewel case with the books is asking for
that jewel case and CD to get lost. Does anyone have any experience or
advice about how they've dealt with this?
Thanks,
Jenica.
