	COORDINATOR OF REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION
MABEE LIBRARY, WASHBURN UNIVERSITY
AVAILABLE July 1, 2001

Washburn University seeks a knowledgeable and innovative leader who has
a thorough understanding of the evolving role of libraries in
contemporary higher education and a strong public services background.  
This new position was created as a result of the Mabee Library's
Strategic Planning initiatives.  We seek a highly motivated and creative
librarian who will take a leadership role in the library and will be a
catalyst for new initiatives.    The successful candidate will become a
member of the Library's senior administrative group, sharing
responsibility for the overall direction of the Mabee Library system
with other key managers including the Assistant Director for Technical
Services and the Coordinator for Collection Development and Management. 
This position reports directly to the University Librarian.  With a
staff of 20 and an operating budget of $1.5 million, the Mabee Library
serves Washburn University, a comprehensive university with an
enrollment of 6500 and faculty of 250.   The library system includes
Mabee Library and the Curriculum Resources Center with collections of
360,000 printed volumes, 1500 current periodical titles, special
collections, and electronic offerings.  Instruction is a major goal of
the Library and includes direct instruction by librarians and
course-integrated instruction with the aim of creating an
information-literate student body.  The Mabee Library works
cooperatively with the Washburn University Law Library and actively
participates in the Kansas Regent Libraries Database Consortium.  

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

1. Provide direction and operational management for the planning,
development, implementation, and assessment of reference and
instructional services to on-campus and distance users.

2. Supervise, train and evaluate personnel involved in the provision of
reference and instruction.  

3. Coordinate reference/instruction activities and workflow with other
functional areas of the library and university. 

4. Identify, evaluate and promote new technologies

5. Work with the Coordinator of Collection Development and Management to
develop a collection of reference materials in all formats.

6. Participate in library-wide programs such as collection development,
assessment, and strategic planning.

7. Take a leadership role, locally and nationally, in identifying and
implementing new developments in the field through active participation
in professional organizations.  


REQUIREMENTS:  ALA-accredited MLS; Broad working knowledge of academic
library operations and techniques of effective supervision.  Excellent
interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.  Three or more
years of professional experience in reference and instruction. 
Substantial knowledge and/or experience with regard to reference
services, library instruction, assessment, supervision, and electronic
information services. Basic computer competencies including
word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases.  

PREFERRED:  Administrative or supervisory experience in an academic
library. Experience with course-integrated instruction, implementation
of instruction programs, and knowledge of information literacy
standards.  Experience or training in the use of Web authoring tools,
courseware products, and desktop publishing software.  Experience or
training in collection development.  Record of dealing successfully with
organizational change; experience in motivating others and providing
effective leadership and supervision of personnel; ability to view
issues from broad, library-wide perspectives.
